The first open house was held on November 18, 2025, at Park Rapids City Hall, and had an estimated 5 attendees from the community. The event featured informational boards, a large map of the study area for input, and comment cards.
The objective was to communicate the study's background and goals and solicit questions, concerns, and opportunities on current operations of the study area.
The community identified several key opportunities:
- Future Development: Multiple future housing developments on the east side of town near Hwy 34 and Career Path Drive
- Traffic lights: Concerns about traffic congestion and not being able to get through the intersection of Hwy 71 and Hwy 34
- Safety: With the addition of Pizza Ranch and Aldi, the is concern with people crossing directly from Aldi to LM Supply
- Heartland Trail Connection: Possible future connection of the Heartland Trail from Heartland Park to Detroit Lakes.

In collaboration with the Highway 71 corridor study in Park Rapids, MnDOT identified Highway 34 as a visioning study to identify pedestrian crossings improvements and other longer-term goals. Potential improvements could be incorporated as part of a pavement resurfacing planned in the next 5-10 years.

This partnership enables a direct connection to the community through a transparent and collaborative process. The committee will help identify the current issues and create a local vision for the corridor. These neighborhood leaders will ensure that community values are represented in the development and evaluation of project alternatives, while fostering conversations within the community.
This committee will consist of a diverse cross-section of community representatives that will study the project details in depth and help define a vision for the corridor.
Along with learning more about traffic safety/engineering concepts, they will:
- Take an in-depth look at the current issues
- Prioritize community needs and preferences
- Develop and research possible solutions
- Cultivate and represent community member’s input
- Evaluate and prioritize preferred alternatives
