Crookston is working to expand safe and convenient walking and bicycling options in town by creating an Active Transportation Master Plan. The Plan will identify short- to long-term opportunities to advance active transportation in the city and identify the action items that will lead to implementation of the recommendations and ideas in the plan. The City will receive additional technical assistance to start implementing the active transportation action plan in spring of 2026.
This project is led by a local planning team that includes people from the following organizations:
Downtown Crookston Development Partnership
Crookston Public Schools
Crookston City Council
Crookston Parks and Recreation
Crookston Housing and Economic Development Authority
Polk County Public Health
Riverview Health
The University of Minnesota – Crookston
Northwest Regional Development Commission
MnDOT District 2
This Active Transportation Action Plan is funded through MnDOT’s Active Transportation Program.
To create a Plan that works for Crookston’s residents, we want to learn about the way you move today and how we might make walking, biking, and rolling (e.g. other mobility devices like scooters or wheelchairs) a safer, more accessible, and enjoyable option in the future. We look forward to your input.

The City of Crookstonwould like to hear from you about the demonstration project on Barrette St.Demonstration projects are temporary roadway projects that use low-cost materials to test changes to the street before potentially investing longer-termsolutions.
The goal of this project is to test out street and intersection changes to make walking and biking easier, safer and more enjoyable for everyone. Your responses will help us understand how well the project meets these goals.
The project includes:
An 8-foot-wide shared-use walking and biking path near the Ray Ecklund Park Complex. The path will be on the east side of Barrette St between Central Ave and Summit Ave. The path will be separated from vehicles by temporary flexible delineators (“flex-posts”).
Painted curb extensions (also knows as “bump-outs”) and marked crosswalks at the intersection of Barrette St and Central Ave.
A painted crosswalk on Barrette St in the middle of the block between Summit Ave and Central Ave.
The survey should take about5 minutes to complete. Your responses will remain confidential. Thank you for your time!
