We’re planning to build a roundabout at the intersection of Hwy 63 (75th Street Northwest )and Olmsted Co. Rd. 112 to reduce crashes and improve driver safety in the area. This is an intersection with two highway-speed roadways. Stop signs control traffic on Co. Rd. 112. At times, drivers become impatient because of limited gaps in traffic. This has led to a sustained history of crashes.

Building a roundabout at the intersection will help reduce dangerous driving behavior and the number of crashes by improving traffic flow.

MnDOT and Olmsted County are hosting a second in-person public meeting on Thursday, Sept. 19 for community members, residents and local businesses to learn more about the roundabout that will be constructed at the intersection of Hwy 63 and Olmsted Co. Rd. 112. Project team members will be available to answer questions and share what to expect during construction. If you are unable to attend, the handout and the display boards are in our Documents feed on this page or click the links. Full meeting details in our news feed below.

Benefits of a roundabout

  • Significantly reduces the risk of serious and fatal crashes
  • Allows drivers to get through the intersection more safely and in less time
    • Roundabouts handle high levels of traffic with less delay than most stop signs or signals
  • Slows traffic to make entering and exiting the area easier for all users

Update from the public meeting, Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023

Thank you to everyone who attended the in-person public meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 12 or provided their feedback through the survey.

A summary of what we heard from the community is available. Take some time to read through the engagement summary. We appreciate your time and interest in this important safety project.

Community feedback summary, January 2024

Your feedback and answers to our questions were helpful. Here's a summary of your thoughts from our September outreach. Thank you for aiding our efforts.

Here's a quick snapshot of your thoughts:

  • More than half of respondents stated that they believe the new roundabout will resolve safety concerns at this intersection.
  • When asked why, many respondents answered that the new roundabout will improve safety by reducing speeds and eliminating the left turning movement.

Over 85% of respondents answered that they feel comfortable navigating roundabouts.

  • Many respondents are excited about the new intersection and would like it completed as soon as possible.
  • Those who stated they do not feel comfortable with navigating roundabouts also stated that they prefer a four-way stop or stoplights in the area.

In partnership, Olmsted County and MnDOT are planning to build a roundabout at the intersection of Hwy 63 and Olmsted Co. Rd. 112, near Rochester. Construction is expected to occur in 2025. High speeds and large volumes of traffic near the intersection make it difficult to safely drive through the intersection resulting in impatient driving behavior and a sustained history of serious accidents.

Building a roundabout at the intersection will help reduce impatient driving behavior and the number of crashes by reducing speed and improving traffic flow. Roundabouts have proven effective at safely managing traffic flow in high volume areas.

    Benefits of a roundabout:

    • Improve safety and reduce the risk of serious and fatal crashes
      • A MnDOT study demonstrated roundabouts may reduce fatal and serious crashes by more than 80%
    • Reduce impatient driving behavior
    • Slows traffic to make entering and exiting the intersection safer and easier for all users
    • Allow drivers to travel through the intersection more efficiently
    • Dangerous collisions are less likely by reducing speeds and eliminating left-turn and crossing accidents

    Navigating a roundabout

Roundabouts may be unfamiliar at first, but with practice navigating them will get easier with each trip. Watch our roundabout simulation and see how it works. (Click on the expand icon in the lower right to enlarge the video.)
