Project study

MnDOT is taking a detailed look at how Hwy 71 in Sauk Centre is used today—how people drive, walk, bike and move along the corridor. What we learn will guide us in planning two future projects (2034):

  • Replace the Hwy 71 bridge over I‑94
  • Resurface Hwy 71 at the south junction area of Hwy 28

Goals
Hwy 71 from 12th St. S to Hwy 28 in south Sauk Centre at the I-94 interchange. Select map image to enlarge

  • Understand how the corridor works today and where issues exist
  • Identify trouble areas in traffic and safety
  • Compare practical and cost‑effective design options
  • Improve safety, traffic flow and intersections for all users

Key focus areas

  • High commercial truck volumes
  • Update signals or consider roundabouts (south junction of Hwy 71 and Hwy 28)
  • Best ways to manage traffic near the I‑94 interchange, includes Hwy 71 on/off ramp intersections
  • Safe, predictable access for nearby properties
  • Better pedestrian and bicycle access along the corridor

Get Involved

MnDOT will share updates as the study progresses and provide opportunities for the public to learn more and share input.
