MnDOT is looking into conditions along Highway 169 in Sherburne County as part of a Road Safety Audit (RSA). The audit will cover Hwy 169 from the County Road 33 Interchange (Elk River) to CR 29 Interchange (Princeton). A Road Safety Audit studies planned or existing roadways and looks at crash history, traffic data, prior plans and recommendations, and existing conditions. An important part of the audit is public input to help identify potential safety improvements. MnDOT has put together a specialized team of independent, multidisciplinary experts to review the safety and operations of Hwy 169. Check back on this website for updates on the study.

Goal

The primary goal of the Hwy 169 audit is to identify traffic safety issues and propose strategies to improve safety of all road users.

Summary of work

During the Highway 169 audit, the interdisciplinary team will:

  • Assess current conditions: Document existing traffic and roadway conditions.
  • Analyze crash data: Identify areas of safety concern through traffic crash data analysis.
  • Gather public input: Collect transportation experiences and safety concerns from the community.
  • Conduct field reviews: Identify safety risks in the area through field reviews.
  • Develop solutions: Create and evaluate improvement ideas based on all information gathered.
  • Propose improvements: Suggest short-, medium-, and long-term safety enhancements.
  • Prepare a report: Compile a comprehensive report to guide future projects along Highway 169.

    Hwy 169 Road Safety Audit

A Road Safety Audit (RSA) is a formal safety performance examination of an existing or future road or intersection by an independent audit team. The RSA team considers the safety of all road users, and qualitatively estimates and reports on road safety issues and opportunities for safety improvement.

Why is MnDOT conducting an RSA on Hwy 169?

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has identified significant safety concerns along the Hwy 169 corridor in Sherburne County. This corridor averages over 100 crashes annually, highlighting the need for a thorough safety evaluation. MnDOT is leading a comprehensive study of Hwy 169 between County Road (CR) 33 in Elk River and CR 29 in Princeton to identify necessary safety improvements.

    Scope of the study

The study will evaluate the entire corridor, including intersections, interchanges, and other safety aspects.

    Public Involvement

Public comments are crucial to the success of this study. We will gather feedback on experiences, areas of concern, and potential improvements along Hwy 169 from February 3, 2025, to March 7, 2025. Your input will be visible on our interactive map, allowing for a collaborative approach to identifying and addressing safety issues.

We encourage you to participate and share your insights to help make Hwy 169 safer for everyone.
