Engagement summary – October 2026

This summer we conducted our first phase of engagement, which focused on understanding how people travel along and across I-694. Through community events, stakeholder outreach, an online survey, a comment map and a virtual public meeting, more than 2,000 community members, businesses and travelers shared feedback about their experiences.

Feedback highlighted seven themes:

  • Congestion: People experience significant congestion throughout the study area, particularly at river crossings and major interchanges, where delays regularly affect both weekday and weekend travel.

  • Safety: People are concerned about unsafe driving conditions caused by a combination of aggressive or distracted driving, confusing roadway design, difficult merges, lane drops and inconsistent signage.

  • Connections: People highlighted the importance of strong local and regional connections, identifying gaps, barriers and challenges that affect how different users move through the transportation network.

  • Walking and biking: People described walking and biking across I-694 as difficult and uncomfortable due to fragmented trail connections, limited crossing opportunities, long wait times and routes that feel unsafe for people of all ages and abilities.

  • Mainline design: People identified merging and weaving conflicts as major concerns, particularly near clustered ramps and interchange areas and called for road designs that reduce conflicts and improve traffic flow.

  • Local street and ramp design: People expressed concerns about intersections near ramps, citing limited visibility, challenging pedestrian crossings and signal timing issues that affect safety and mobility for all users.

  • Equity and access: People described I-694 as a barrier between communities and emphasized the need for safer, more convenient connections to schools, parks, trails and destinations throughout the study area. They also highlighted the importance of providing transportation options beyond adding road capacity.

How feedback will be used

The feedback and identified themes, together with technical analysis and existing transportation data, will help confirm study needs and shape the development of future improvement concepts. We’ll share potential ideas and solutions with the community and ask for their feedback in the next phase of engagement.
