Scoping
Scoping is the early planning stage of a MnDOT project. During scoping, the project team looks at the needs of the area, reviews possible solutions, and decides what the project should include. This helps MnDOT understand the problems, set priorities, and make a clear plan before design work begins.
Preliminary Design
Preliminary design is the stage where MnDOT starts turning project ideas into early plans. The team further studies the area, reviews options, and creates draft layouts that show what improvements could be made. This helps MnDOT understand costs, safety needs, and how the project may affect people and the environment before moving on to detailed design.
Final Design
Final design is the stage where MnDOT completes the detailed plans for the project. This includes exact measurements, construction drawings, and instructions contractors will follow during building. The project team also finalizes costs, schedules, and any needed permits. When final design is done, the project is ready for construction.
Letting
Letting is the step where MnDOT asks construction companies to bid on the project. Contractors review the final plans and submit their prices. MnDOT then chooses the lowest responsible bid. After letting, the project can move into construction.
Construction
Construction is when the project is built. Crews bring equipment to the site, follow the approved plans, and complete the work. This may include temporary changes, sidewalk closures, or detours. When construction is finished, the walking areas are opened for public use. The crew will move on to the next area of work.
