North Mankato Active Transportation Plan

This project is led by a coalition that includes representatives from the City of North Mankato, the Mankato/North Mankato Area Planning Organization (MAPO), the Greater Mankato Bike and Walk Advocates, the Southern Minnesota Independent Living Enterprises and Services (SMILES) center, and Nicollet County’s Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP). This Active Transportation Plan is funded through MnDOT’s Active Transportation Program.

The following vision and goals will guide the future of active transportation in North Mankato:

Vision:

A complete network of accessible sidewalks, bikeways, and multi-use trails that safely connect people to key destinations across North Mankato and beyond.

Goals:

  • Mode Shift: Develop comfortable and convenient active transportation infrastructure that encourages walking, rolling, and biking for short everyday trips.
  • All Ages & Abilities: Create an accessible and inclusive active transportation network that addresses the needs of residents of all ages and abilities.
  • Health & Well-being: Support a healthy and active lifestyle for North Mankato residents by making walking, rolling, and biking convenient modes for daily transportation needs.
  • Connectivity: Provide safe and accessible pedestrian and biking connections between neighborhoods, schools, parks, businesses, essential services, and regional destinations.
  • Sustainable & Resilient: Identify key linkages between active transportation and land use that can support future pedestrian and biking infrastructure improvements.
