We are developing a Metro District Freight Plan. This plan will provide local decision makers with a better understanding of the freight system, needs, and issues specific to the Metro District. It will be used to inform future freight transportation system policies, programs and projects in the region. An improved understanding of the Metro freight system helps us to better ensure Minnesotans have access to key goods and services.

Once the Metro District Freight Plan is completed, all MnDOT districts will have a District Freight Plan that analyzes the long-term district freight issues and needs. The Statewide Freight Plan was adopted by MnDOT in November 2024. Engagement events in the metro area were held in coordination with the Statewide Freight Plan and the Metro District Freight Plan in 2024. MnDOT engaged with the public through pop-up tables at community events in the metro area and with an online comment map. MnDOT also engaged with industry stakeholders through an online industry survey. In 2025, we continue stakeholder engagement and develop the draft plan document.

We want to hear your experiences and thoughts on freight. We want to hear from stakeholders and communities who haven’t traditionally been involved in freight planning. We will use this platform to keep you updated about the development of the Metro District Freight Plan and public engagement opportunities. Stay tuned for project updates as the final draft plan will be published for public review in spring 2025. MnDOT will provide the public an opportunity to review and comment on the final draft of the 2025 Metro District Freight Plan.
