Hwy 25 Study - Monticello to Big Lake
Since last fall, we have been working on a comprehensive study of the Hwy 25 corridor in partnership with the cities of Monticello and Big Lake and Wright and Sherburne counties. The study focuses on the segment of Hwy 25 stretching from 85th St NE in Monticello to Hwy 10 in Big Lake, about 4.5 miles.
We'll host a public open house 4-6 p.m. on Aug. 4 at the Monticello Community Center to present potential improvements. Can't make the meeting? Here is the information that is being presented at the Aug. 4th open house: Open House Info for Hwy 25 (PDF, 12 MB)
Study overview
We are looking to accelerate near-term improvements in the project area that could address key concerns such as:
- High traffic volumes and congestion
- Improving traffic signal operations
- Closely spaced intersections and mid-block access
- Walkability and bikeability for people of all abilities
Particular focus areas for this study include:
- Signalized intersections at Seventh St, Broadway St, River St, and CR 11/CR 14 (Park Blvd SE)
- Hwy 25/I-94 bridge and interchange area
- Westbound I-94 exit ramp to Hwy 25
- Access management from I-94 to Hwy 10
- Speeds entering Big Lake
- Bike and pedestrian facilities between Monticello and Big Lake
Potential changes
The project team is finalizing proposed recommendations which could include:
- Improving traffic signal operations and considering adding a roundabout
- Adding median and closing some intersection access to make traffic flow smoother
- Creating right in, right out intersections and adding a J-turn to minimize crashes
- Adding a second right turn lane on westbound I-94 ramp to Hwy 25
- Removing traffic signal at River St and replace with pedestrian beacon
How this study differs from the Hwy 25 Area PEL study
This study is being coordinated with the Hwy 25 Area Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) study led by Wright and Sherburne Counties. The goal of the PEL study is to create a long-term vision for cost-effective alternatives that address the primary needs of vehicle safety and mobility in the greater area.
