Crookston Active Transportation Action Plan
This project is led by a coalition that includes people from the Downtown Crookston Development Partnership, City of Crookston, Crookston Public Schools, Polk County Public Health, Riverview Health, the University of Minnesota – Crookston, And MnDOT District 2. This Active Transportation Action Plan is funded through MnDOT’s Active Transportation Program.
The local planning team has drafted a vision and set of goals to guide the future of active transportation in Crookston:
Working Vision:
Crookston will connect community members, regardless of age, ability, or economic status, through a safe, inclusive network for walking, biking, rolling, and riding.
Working Goals
- Plan a direct, coherent network that invites people to access jobs, schools, and recreation without needing a vehicle. Include the network in the Comprehensive Plan.
- Determine community needs for walking, biking, and rolling along and across the Red Lake River, Highway 2 and Highway 75. Use engagement and site visits to determine the highest priority locations. Decide if shared or separated facilities should be proposed at each crossing.
- Leverage partnerships with public health and community stewards (such as Empowering Small MN Communities Program, Crookston Parks & Rec, MN Design Center, Polk County Public Health, Northwest Development Commission, UMC Engagement Office) for the promotion and maintenance of Crookston’s active transportation system. Incorporate a framework for these partners to co-create a promotion and maintenance plan.
