The City of Alexandria is working to develop an Active Transportation Action Plan which will provide the City with key next steps and priorities for making walking, biking, and rolling an easier and more comfortable choice, especially for historically underserved Alexandria communities. The Action Planning process will also include a demonstration project – the temporary installation of improved active transportation facilities at a specific location designed to inform the future permanent installation of improvements. The goals for Alexandria Active Transportation Action Plan were created based on the priorities the city identified in their application for the MnDOT Active Transportation Planning Assistance Program and in consultation with the Alexandria Active Transportation Planning Committee and Planning Leads.

The West Central Initiative is also conducting a Safe Routes to School planning process at the same time as the City's Active Transportation Action Plan. The Action Plan will coordinate with the Safe Routes to School planning process, with both plans aiming to improve walking, biking, and rolling in Alexandria, whether to school, to work, or for fun. We need your help

We need your help identifying how we might make walking, biking, and rolling (e.g., other mobility devices like scooters and wheelchairs) a safer, more accessible, and enjoyable option in Alexandria. We welcome your input and look forward to our active transportation future.

Help Shape Alexandria's Active Transportation Future!

The Alexandria Active Transportation Plan project team has developed a proposed Active Transportation Priority Network based on input from city staff and community feedback collected from the survey, walking and biking audits, and network mapping workshop held in June. Now, we need your help to refine it!

  • Explore and place pins on the interactive map to see where improvements such as bike lanes or trails, improved crosswalks, sidewalks, and traffic calming might be added. Your input is crucial in creating a safer, more accessible, and enjoyable Alexandria for people walking and biking.
